"Was die Musik...mit Eskimotänzen zu tun hat, konnte ich zwar nicht herausfinden, jedoch die Tatsache, daß sie bezüglich ihrer Konventionalität in unseren Breitengraden verbreitet ist, wie eben die Tänze der Eskimos. Schon die Besetzung (2 Tenorsaxophonisten, 2 Posaunisten, Baß und Schlagzeug) läßt vermuten, daß hier Musiker zu Werke sind, die etwas Eigenwilliges schaffen wollen. Und das ist ihnen zweifelsohne gelungen. Die Stücke, ausschließlich Eigenkompositionen von Ferdinand Rexforth und Gerd Hemmen, sprühen nur so vor Experimentierfreude: stechend scharfe Bläsersätze, groovende kraftvolle Rhythmen, exzessive freie Passagen und gefühlvolle Balladen. Hier ist von allem etwas dabei. Aber nichts ist so, wie man es kennt. Die Arrangements sind geprägt von unberechenbarer Abwechslung und außergewöhnlichem Spielwitz. Jedes der Mitglieder bekommt genügend Freiräume, um sich solistisch auszuleben, und trotzdem ist es der eigenartige Gruppensound, der diese CD zu einem Unikum der ganz besonderen Sorte macht. Hinzu kommt, daß die Klangqualität hervorragend ist. Für Ohren, die gerne mal was nicht Alltägliches an sich ranlassen, ein absoluter Geheimtip."

What the music of the Mörfiye sextet has in common with the dances of the Eskimos escapes me, but its conventionality is about as widespread in our part of the world as those dances are.
Already the makeup of the band (2 tenor sax players, 2 trombonists, bass and drums) makes you assume that these musicians are willing to create something unconventional. Without a doubt they have succeeded.
The titles, all composed by Ferdinand Rexforth and Gerd Hemmen, brim over with joyful experiments: crisp and precise brass and reeds, grooving and powerful rhythms, excessive
free passages and expressive ballads - you name it. But nothing is like the ordinary stuff you might expect.
The arrangements are marked by a sense of variety that keeps surprising you and by exceptional musical skills and verve.
Each player enjoys sufficient freedom to make the most of his solos, and yet it is the peculiar sound of the group as a whole which makes this CD so unique and special. Furthermore, the sound quality is excellent. This CD is an absolute must for those who from time to time enjoy hearing something which is not off the peg.

"Eine Art Techno für Jazzer

Im Jahre 1981 startete der Tenorsaxofonist Ferdinand Rexforth seine Auftrittskarriere mit einem Konzert im Kulturzentrum Schlachthof. Bemerkenswerte Projekte mit Kasseler Musikern folgten, allen voran das Sextett "Mörfiye". Jetzt, nach 20 Jahren, stellte der mittlerweise in Essen beheimatete Musiker und Komponist sein jüngstes Ensemble, das international besetzte "Ferdinand Rexforth Jazzproject" vor.

Die ungewöhnliche "Mörfiye"-Besetzung wurde dabei beibehalten, es gibt kein Harmonie-Instrument. Aber zwei Saxofone (außer Rexforth der Altist Dmitrij Markitantov aus Kiew) sowie Trompete (Lars Kuklinski) und Posaune (Matthias Müller) ermöglichen komplexe Bläsersätze, die in Bass (Jorge Vallejo) und Schlagzeug (Tarik Dosdogru aus der Türkei) ihr Fundament finden. Treu geblieben ist Ferdinand Rexforth auch seinem vertrackt-intellektuellen, mit ungeraden Rhythmen und abrupten Stimmungswechseln angereicherten Stil, der in den exzentrischen Titel seine Entsprechung findet.

Die Werke heißen etwa "Starship Field Propulsion" (Sternenschiff Feldantrieb) oder "Rollercoaster" (Achterbahn) und klingen auch so...... schroffe Klangmixturen und kraftvolle Beats ("eine Art Techno für Jazzer")... (dienen)...als Basis für Solo-Powerplay. Das Sextett meistert diese Gratwanderung zwischen strengem Arrangement und expressivem Ausleben mit großem Können und Spielwitz..."

"A Kind Of  Techno For Jazzmusicians

In 1981 tenor sax player Ferdinand Rexforth started his stage career with a concert at the "Kulturzentrum Schlachthof". Remarkable projects with musicians from Kassel followed, above all the "Mörfiye" sextet.
Now, 20 years later and at the old familiar place, the musician and composer, who has made Essen his new home, introduced his current band, the Ferdinand Rexforth Jazzproject, with members of various nationalities.

The unusual Mörfiye mix of instruments has been preserved: there is no harmony instrument. But the two saxophones (in addition to Rexforth there is alto player Dmitrij Markitantov from Kiew) as well as trumpet (Lars Kuklinski) and trombone (Matthias Müller) make possible complex wind sections which are given a solid basis by bassist Jorge Vallejo from Bogota and drummer Tarik Dosdogru from Turkey.
Another thing Ferdinand Rexforth has remained faithful to is his tricky intellectual style enriched by odd rhythms and abrupt changes of mood, which are all reflected  in the eccentric choice of  titles:
